Okay, so this post is for all of my book worms who love to find a novel that will transport them someplace totally new. It could be

Anyways,

This Mortal Coil totally exceeded my expectations not only for a romance, but more importantly a science fiction novel! I have to admit that the sci-fi genre is not usually my first choice, but Emily Suvada has this incredible voice and ability to weave fantastic science into the modern language spoken today. I found myself following along with conversations of coding and gene technology, when the day before, those things were so far removed I don't know the last time I read anything to do with coding for computers. It adds to the conversation even more when you talk about a woman protagonist from the book having this great mind for coding and hacking, when the conversation in "reality" deals with the very same concept. More and more women are shedding the predetermined roles given to them by society, and standing on equal ground with the men in all fields, including the field of technology and science.

I have a friend who is this beautiful spunky little red head, and she is the first girl who came to mind when I started reading this book. Besides being very witty and smart, she managed to convince a start up coding company to open a position for her, where she is the only women among men cranking out these equations and systems that I have no idea about! Pretty kick ass right? We haven't spoken in a while (I know, I am a bad friend), but I do know that she used to tell me stories of how even though she could code and work right alongside the men in her field, she still found herself being treated differently. Most of them probably didn't even realize they were treating her in an inferior like manner, but it is crazy how much our society has to evolve where gender no longer determines someone's respect or IQ level, including skin color, nationality, etc. It seems like an impossibly tall wall to climb but I believe in the power of good true people working together to slowly but surely lessen the ignorance that can be passed down each generation.

So to make a long story short, Emily Suvada is an awesome up and coming author who just released This Mortal Coil in October of this year, so if you have read the book and are like me, I am wishing I was as behind as I normally am with new reads! As in, I usually find a great novel that keeps me glued to its pages cover to cover after the initial craze, where at least two books in a series have been released. I know as an avid book reader, it does not make sense, but it has been helpful because now I have to wait who knows how long for the next book in this trilogy. SO GO OUT AND READ THIS BOOK:) I highly recommend it as a clever, inventive, and stellar science fiction. Not to mention it has just the right dash of romance to add to the story and not to detract.

Reading improves your brain functions and activities people! I promise. Let us all remember our brains need exercise too.

Sincerely,

Jessi Hope
